Crown of Life

Medals, trophies and awards are reminders that we are seen. Our humanness revels in them. But our souls are yearning for more. James, the brother of Jesus, writes, “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him” (1:12).

The crown of life is our reward for faithful perseverance. It is the promise of an eternity in paradise with the One who created us, saves us, and loves us.

Today’s crowns are a memento that you are seen and appreciated by your peers. Let them also be a reminder for you to persevere. Take the smallest leaps of faith and resist the biggest temptations. Just keep going. Trust Jesus and pursue Him.

Because today’s crowns are cardboard and glitter. The crown of life, on the other hand, is imperishable, and it awaits each of us who endure the world and place our hope in Jesus.

Let’s pray.

Dear Jesus, thank you for allowing us to come together to celebrate one another. We ask that you bless this time, and as we leave here, teach us to endure and to trust you. Help our unbelief and grow our faith. We love you. Amen.
